What is Dementia?

In Hong Kong, 5 – 8% of population aged 65 or above are diagnosed with Dementia. The prevalence rates rise to 20 – 30% for population aged 80 or above.

In addition, according to the forecast of a study, in 2039, among persons aged 60 and above, 333 000 will suffer from dementia.

Alzheimer’s Disease
  • 50% to 75% of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer's Disease
  • It destroys brain cells and nerves, disrupting the transmitters that carry messages in the brain, particularly those responsible for storing memories.
  • It is a progressive condition, patients’ ability to remember and communicate will gradually decline.
  • In the later stages of dementia, a patient may need full nursing care and become bed-ridden.
Vascular Dementia
  • It is caused when decreased blood flow damages brain tissue.
  • Cognitive performance decline in a “Stepwise” manner.
  • The symptoms depend on which part of the brain is affected.
Lewy Body Dementia
  • It is caused by clumps of protein forming inside brain cells. These abnormal deposits are called Lewy bodies.
  • Patients may experience mood swings and emotional changes every day.
  • Symptoms include delusions, fall and Parkinson's-like tremors.
Frontotemporal Dementia
  • It contributes <10% for the cause of dementia cases.
  • It is the result of damage to neurons in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain.
  • Signs include personality and behavioral changes, and language problems.
Common behavioral and psychological problems include:
  • Wandering
  • Anger
  • Aggression
  • Loss of Motivation
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Depression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not there)
  • Repetition
